Former NFL quarterback Vince Young wants to let you know he is not impressed with some of the current quarterbacks in the league; especially if they are named Ryan Fitzpatrick or Blaine Gabbert. In a new Sports Illustrated cover story, Young reiterated his frustration of not getting a roster spot while other perceivably, less-skilled quarterbacks got plenty of opportunities. According to Bleacher Report, writer Greg Bishop shared some news with Young about the Arizona Cardinals signing Blaine Gabbert while adding that Fitzpatrick was holding elsewhere.

“Exactly,” he said. “I hate to name-drop, but Fitzpatrick is still playing?! He leads the league in interceptions, and he’s still f–king getting paid? I mean, what the f–k is going on?”

It might look salty on Young’s part but he did not lie. Last year, Fitzpatrick finished the season 3rd in interceptions as well as a 3-8 record as a starter. Gabbert was no shining spot either. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback started 1-4 last season before being benched by Colin Kaepernick. And it still did not stop him from landing a potential backup role on the Cardinals.

“I’d see a quarterback and be like, ‘Dude is garbage, and I’m over here in the kitchen cooking turkey necks?!'”

Young has been retired from the league since 2014. He was drafted as the 3rd overall pick in 2006 by the Tennessee Titans. As a Titan early in his career, he had some promising success by leading his team to the playoffs and even earning a spot to the Pro Bowl. His mobility and determination to win was enough to project as one of the best in the league. However, all subsequent success was derailed when he got a knee injury in the beginning of 2009 followed by a public dispute with then-head coach Jeff Fisher. After his release in 2010, he played for the Eagles and made some appearances with the Bills, Packers and Browns. Young attempted a comeback with the Canadian Football League but that ended abruptly when he suffered a hamstring injury.

At the time that Vince Young retired, he probably was considered someone who deserved a shot. However, being out of the league this long will put into question what he can do as a quarterback, especially at his age. One of the main things that Fitzpatrick holds over Young is a 79.7 but Gabbert sits at 71.9. Young has a 74.4 rating as well as a 31-19 record as a starter. He once asked for his hometown Houston Texans to sign him, something that a significant portion of the city has been asking for since the team passed him over him in the 2006 draft. Young isn’t necessarily “young” anymore but it would be great to see a veteran have one more shot, especially one who has had the capabilities of Young.
