Should the Steve McNair Murder-Suicide Case Be Re-Opened?
By Daphne R
NFL Titan’s late quarterback, Steve McNair, as you recall was murdered in 2009 by his mistress, Sahel Kazemi. Since his death his widow, Mechelle, has been less than nice to his mother, Lucille McNair. Mechelle approached Steve’s mother shortly after his death and asked her to pay rent in the amount of $3,000 for the $1 million home her son had built for her during his rise to stardom because her name was not listed on the house.
When Steve McNair died suddenly at the hands of his lover (according to police) who also committed suicide, there was no Will to be found anywhere. Steve’s mother asked about the Will which she was sure existed somewhere. His widow, Mechelle, said she looked everywhere but couldn’t find it. Steve’s agent had told her that the Will was done but to his knowledge, Steve had never signed it. Because no Will could be produced, all Steve McNair’s assets went solely to his wife. Mechelle told Lucille that her lawyer’s instructed her that since Lucille’s name was not on the house documents, she should pay rent on the house.
When Lucille couldn’t pay, Mechelle took the house from her and sold it for a reported $2 million and cut off all contact between Lucille and her grandchildren. Once Lucille settled into to her new home, she received a letter from Mechelle’s lawyer’s requesting $54,363 for appliances she had taken with her from the home. Appliances that she had purchased herself.
In an interview on True Crime with Aphrodite Jones, former Nashville police office, Vincent Hill, is suspect about whether this case was truly a murder-suicide. When Aphrodite Jones asked him why would McNair’s wife Mechelle want to kill her ”golden goose”, he said, “It goes back to the money. If you get a divorce, it’s probably not going to last you too long. If the ‘goose’ is out of the picture then you can sell the ranch that Steve built for his mother, you can sell the foundation, you can sell the cattle, all the land. It looks like a better pot of gold to me.”
If Steve McNair had had a Will, it probably would have named other beneficiaries, including his children by other women. Mechelle was the mother of his youngest two children, Tyler and Trenton. McNair had two other children by two other women.
Although this case has been considered solved for more than four years, at the anniversary of his death each year I think people still question how the police handled or mishandled this case. A lot of things just don’t add up, namely the motive behind his lover murdering him and the fact that she only had a little residue on her left hand after reportedly firing five shots from the gun she’s said to have purchased. In my opinion, this case should be re-opened and there are two likely suspects, his lover’s ex-boyfriend and his widow, Mechelle McNair. Why Mechelle? There’s something wrong, perhaps even evil, about Mechelle McNair asking her murdered husband’s mother to move out of the house he built for her and then selling it for millions. It definitely raises suspicion. She had the most to gain seemingly from this whole ordeal.
