Over the last couple of weeks there has been a lot said in the debate over who would win in a one-on-one match against each other in their primes, Michael Jordan or LeBron James.

Retired NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has been very vocal as of late with his opinion on “barbershop” sports topics.  Shaq recently had an epic debate with former Chicago Bulls great Scottie Pippen debating whether an all-time Bulls squad would defeat an all-time Los Angeles Lakers squad.  Hilariously, Shaq shut down Pippen when he called him a “sidekick”.jordanshaq

In regards to the Air Jordan vs. King James battle, Shaq does have the distinction of actually facing off against both players relatively in their prime, which makes his perspective a little more credible and not just an answer based on fanhood.

In a recent interview, Shaq did take Jordan over LeBron but tossed another NBA great’s name in the discussion that he felt would take out both MJ and LBJ:

shaqlbjIt would be an interesting game. Young LeBron was more like (Lakers Hall of Famer) Magic Johnson. He was sort of like Magic with Jordan’s abilities. He liked to pass, and he liked to get it up.

But Mike was Mike. He was just special, like no one else. He always did things no one else could do, and things you couldn’t compare to anyone else. So he was special, and he’d win.

Shaq believes that ABA and NBA great Julius “Dr. J” Erving would beat both players:

“I’ve seen young Mike and young LeBron and I must say Dr. J is drjdunkstill my favorite player,” Shaq said. “A lot of people today don’t even mention his name but to me I still think he was the best. But these are questions that we’ll never know the answer to.”

While it is true we will never know who would win, I like the fact that at least Shaq isn’t just conceding to the notion that the GOAT is either Michael Jordan or LeBron James.

Dr. J was without a doubt an inspiration to Michael Jordan, almost as much as an inspiration as he is to Kobe Bryant.
