Instagram has been known to get a lot of cheaters in trouble but it is becoming more common for its role in busting criminals as well.

instagramAccording to Memolition.com, Mexican drug lord Jose Rodrigo Arechiga Gamboa was arrested for drug charges at the Amsterdam Airport. The funny thing, if that is possible about this situation, is that the tip did not come from a jealous neighbor, double-crossing employees or bitter ex-girlfriend. Rather the authorities were tipped off by something very close to Gamboa: His very own Instagram account.

A lot of people post their lives to Instagram, a photo and video sharing application. However, if you are going to be a top enforcer in one of Mexico’s top drug cartels you may want to keep that away from the realm of “likes” and “reposts”. But apparently Gamboa, also known as El chino Anthrax did not grasp that concept. Daily Mail has quite a few of the “scores” of pictures that were posted about his expensive lifestyle. One picture shows Gamboa holding a gold-plated machine gun in his lap. Another picture shows a bag of Christian Louboutins with gamboa2spikes all around. Perhaps the most interesting of all pictures, was showing Gamboa photo-bombing a picture with socialite Paris Hilton for an interview with an Asian television network.

Gamboa was arrested after being caught using a fake name after arriving from South America. A U.S. law enforcement official says he is suspected of being a lead member of the Silanoa cartel and also wanted for drug charges in  California. The cartel made headlines back in 2011 after hanging three men off of a bridge after one of the cartel’s leaders were murdered. The cartel also recently made headlines when Business Insider discovered it brokered a deal with the U.S. government, between 2000 to 2012, to smuggle billions of dollars’ worth of drugs in exchange for information of rival cartels.
