LeBron James opts out of his deal with the Miami Heat and will become a free agent
Bad news for Miami Heat fans, who probably thought that LeBron James was going to be their man for life. According to Chris Broussard at ESPN, James is opting out of his contract with the Heat in order to become an unrestricted free agent. James’ agent, Richie Paul, says that James has informed the Heat of his decision.
James was going to earn $20 million this year, and had two years left on his contract. He had until June 30th to decide what to do. Here’s more of what Broussard had to say:
After Miami’s season-ending loss to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, James told reporters he would take a vacation with his family before considering his contract options.
James did indicate that he welcomed the opportunity to become a free agent and have the same level of flexibility he was afforded in 2010, when he signed with Miami after spending his first seven years in Cleveland.
The decision by James might be a huge blow to Heat fans, who’ve already endured a humiliating beating in the NBA finals by the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs defeated Miami by double digits over three games in a row after it appeared that the finals might actually be competitive.
There is no word on where LeBron will play next. Where do you think he’ll go?
