Pharrell, one half of the production duo Neptunes, is a veteran hit-maker who has created the sonic backdrops of many of music’s top stars will perform before the game during the player introductions and promises “surprise guests”.
The NBA All-Star Game will air on TNT February 16th and will be played at the New Orleans’ Pelicans newly-christened arena, the Smoothie King Center.
I think Kendrick Lamar performing before the Slam Dunk Contest is an excellent choice, as he is easily one of the most popular hip-hop artists of today and still brings a street element to the dunk contest, the NBA’s most “street” attraction. Kendrick Lamar, although his debut album good kid, m.A.A.d city was released in 2012, has a lot of hits and anthems that are sure to get the crowd hyped to see the NBA’s aerial assault on the rim.
Pharrell has worked with the music industries A-list as either a producer or performer so I can only imagine who he has in store for his performance set. Some of his biggest singles have featured the likes of Snoop Dogg, Jay Z, Gwen Stefani, Shakira, Justin Timberlake and scored the biggest song of last Summer with Blurred Lines featuring T.I. and Robin Thicke. Pharrell will also have the honor of performing at this year’s Academy Awards Show on March 2nd, a mere two weeks after the All-Star Game. Needless to say, Grammy or no Grammy, Kendrick Lamar and Pharrell are “winning” and doing it big.
Below you can listen to Kendrick Lamar and Pharrell’s only released collaboration to date, good kid, off of Lamar’s smash debut album good kid, m.A.A.d city:
