Jim Brown Wasn’t the Only Great Black LaCrosse Player; There are More
By Yolanda Spivey
Black athletes are once again breaking barriers and making history—this time it’s in the field of lacrosse. The world’s greatest African American players have all gathered together on one team under the banner the Sankofa Lacrosse Alliance. Their mission is to promote academic, professional and social achievement for future generations of lacrosse players.
Chazz Woodson who is co-organizing the team states, “We’ve each been approached about the idea of starting an all Black team numerous times.” He further states, “We decided that we were in a position to really bring it together the right way and with something bigger in mind.”
The Sankofa Lacrosse Alliance has garnered a tremendous amount of support—especially from former and present day players of both men and women. They want to expand the community of African-American lacrosse players.
Kyle Harrison, the organizer of the Alliance states, “It’s about celebrating how far the sport has come, and to show young Black players that there are other players that look just like them playing this sport at a very high level.”
Harrison further states, “This project has been in the works for at least 3 years now. We have had a number of different ideas and visions for where we want this to go, so I’m proud to see it finally come together.”
Harrison and Woodson both played for professional teams in the past. They feel that it is important that African Americans connect to the lacrosse community both geographically and generationally.
A member of the lacrosse team, Tre Sherwood states, “I truly believe a team like this could encourage our black youth to think outside the box when it comes to extracurricular activities and also help launch a movement in a sport that has been long overdue since the days of Syracuse/NFL Legend Jim Brown.”
The team Sankofa got their name from King Adinkera of the Akan people of West Africa. It literally means “it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot.”
October 25, 2013 is Sankofa’s first game against Team England in Providence, RI.
The tentative schedule for the 3 way scrimmage is:
Sankofa v Team England, 2:00p
Sankofa v Brown, 3:00p
Brown v Team England, 4:00p
The scrimmages will be held on Meister-Kavan field at Brown University.
