Massachusetts prison officials confirm that former New England Patriots All Pro Tight End Aaron Hernandez hanged himself in his cell early this morning, just five days after being acquitted of a double murder from 2012.

An official with the Massachusetts Department of Corrections says Hernandez was found hanged in his cell just after 3 am.

Authorities say that Hernandez tried to block the cell door from the inside by jamming the door with various items and then proceeded to hang himself using a bed sheet that he attached to a cell window. Life saving techniques were attempted on the former NFL star.

Hernandez was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominister at 4:07 am. Prison officials say that Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population housing unit at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts.

He was serving a life sentence without parole for the murder of Odin Lloyd in 2013. He was 27 years old.
