Beyonce Could be in Line to Buy her Hometown Houston Rockets
By Brandon Simmons
It seems that one staple of Houston, Texas might be taking over another. According to Sports Illustrated, pop singer Beyonce Knowles-Carter could be joining an investment group that will purchase the Houston Rockets. The Texas native has been rumored to buy her hometown’s franchise that boasts of superstars James Harden and rumored to be valued close to $2 billion.
Last week, the Rockets were announced to be put on sale by owner, Les Alexander. Since then, not only have people expressed shocked but there have also been interest from a few buyers. It was reported that local businessman Jim Mcingvale – better known as Mattress Mac – would be looking to purchase the team through an investment group. The same thing with former Houston Rocket and Atlanta Hawk, Dikembe Mutombo.
The Rockets is estimated to be sold between $1.6 to $2 billion and that might be a little light on the guess. Right now, Harden is on the team and coming off of a MVP season; but the franchise made a trade to add former Los Angeles Clipper Chris Paul to their lineup. Paul will be part of the explosive offense, led by 2016-1017 Coach of the Year Mike D’Antoni. On top of that, rumors Harden has signed a huge $200 million contract extension to keep with him with the team for a little bit longer and the team has been in constant trade rumors to bring in New York Knick Carmelo Anthony.
It seems the NBA is very attractive for R&B/Hip Hop stars to carry out their ownership dreams. Over the years, artists such as Nelly, Justin Timberlake and even Usher have claimed minority ownership in the Charlotte Bobcats (now-Hornets), Memphis Grizzlies and Clevland Cavaliers, respectively. In 2009, Beyonce’s husband, and rap legend, Jay-Z, bought a small ownersip stake in the Nets before they moved form New Jersey to his native Brooklyn, New York. However, Hov had to ditch his minority ownership after forming his Roc Nation sports agency. As far as black owners themselves, Hall-of-Fame guard Michael Jordan is the only African American owner in the NBA who holds a majority ownership in his team, the Charlotte Hornets.
Beyonce buying the Houston Rockets is one of those things that any Houstonian never knew they dreamed of. Her rise to stardom, from the historic 3rd ward neighborhood to the top of the music world, has been nothing short of astronomical. If Beyonce could buy the team that plays about 10 minutes from where she grew up at, it would add to her already growing legend. Sure, her minority stake may not seem like a huge blip to some, but to a fan base that is built on women and minorities developing powerful voices, it is everything.
