AP, Jamaal Charles and Darelle Revis Headline List of Players Cut
By Brandon Simmons
When you hear the names Adrian Petersen, Darelle Revis and Jamaal Charles right before the start of free agency, you would expect news of a huge contract signing, but not is not exactly the case today. All three marquee players were cut from the respective teams on Tuesday and it might leave their future in a trivial position.
For the past 9 seasons, the Kansas City Chiefs have enjoyed the explosiveness of Jamaal Charles at running back. The 4 time pro bowler has been through the good and bad times of the Chiefs. However, injuries have slowed him dramatically. In 2011, he only played in 2 games before getting injured and missing the rest of the year. In the last 2 seasons, he has only played in 8 games the last 2 seasons and the Chiefs have pretty much gone in different directions with running back Spencer Ware.
Running back Adrian Peterson has been nothing short of an icon to the Minnesota Vikings. While running through, and sometimes over, defenders, Peterson has earned himself the moniker “Purple Jesus”. But despite all the glory he has brought to the franchise, injuries have kept him grounded for the most part. In 2011, he suffered an ACL tear 4 games before the season ended. He came back strong the next year and actually won MVP. Last season, he only played 3 games before being sidelined with a knee injury.
Cornerback Darelle Revis might have been the least surprising of this group. His penchant for getting burned by receivers was self-admitteldy blamed on his body being worn down. The man whose single-coverage skills gave him the nickname “Revis Island”, had no shame letting the world know he was eroding. But what really pushed things along, may have been his recent off-the-field troubles. According to NBC Sports Revis is being charged with 2 counts of aggravated assault, one count of robbery and one count of conspiracy. These charges came about after cellphone footage showed him getting into an altercation with two other men.
Each of these players have all served a great purpose to their franchises but it is time for a change at this point in their careers. Revis’ career just might be over considering nobody would want to take a chance on an aging cornerback who just picked up 4 felonies. That money could be spent on a younger free agent while drafting another cornerback to groom and take over. Peterson and Charles actually might have legit shots at continuing their careers. Sure, they have had knee surgeries and the age on a running back takes a heavier toll than other positions, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be factors on a team’s running back committee. It would not force them to carry a heavy workload as they get older. These guys’ future might be in question at the moment, but the answers will not arrive until March 7, when teams can begin talking to players.
